Report by Paddy Ryan

Mitchelstown CBS had an impressive win over neighbours St. Colman’s Fermoy in the Munster Senior B FC semi-final (Corn Dhonncha Uí Nuanáin) at Kildorrery on Saturday.

This was a tough game all through. Both sides had their captain dismissed with red cards in separate incidents during the first half. Mitchelstown CBS were aided by the strong breeze. They took control from the start with Mark Keane outstanding in midfield. They were very solid in the half backline and midfield sectors. Christy English opened with a point in the 4th minute. Cathal O’Mahony followed with a very good point. St. Colman’s lost their captain David Lardner to a red card. The Fermoy side were under pressure from here on. Cathal O’Mahony kicked a great point after good play by Mark Keane. Christy English pointed under pressure with Mark Keane putting Cathal Harrington in for a great point in the 11th minute.

Tomas Vaughan with a Mitchelstown point opened up a six point lead. CBS had their first goal in the 19th minute when the outstanding Cathal O’Mahony put James Keating through 1-6 to 0-0. They added a pointed free. St Colman’s made a few substitutions. They had their opening score in the 26th minute by Brian Roche. CBS lost their captain Mark Keane to a red card with Colman’s having their second score a pointed free by Dylan O’Connor. At half time CBS were 1-7 to 0-2 clear.

St. Colman’s were expected to mount a huge challenge on the restart wind assisted. However, a brilliant goal by Cathal O’Mahony moved his side 2-7 to 0-2 clear. Colman’s had a goal soon after when Dylan O’Connor worked well for Daniel O’Brien who goaled. The cheers for that goal were short lived as Lorcan Finn and James Keating worked very well for Cathal O’Mahony who goaled from close range and put his side 11 points clear – 3-7 to 1-2.

Colman’s had a chance of a goal when Greg Lardner and Eoin Carey worked well putting Conleith Ryan through, a brilliant block down by Lorcan Finn at the last second denied them a goal. The clearance down field saw O’Mahony add a point with Christy English with a free making it 3-9 to 1-2 entering the final quarter. The industrious Eoin Carey had a very good point for Colman’s. They had a goal by Brian Roche with Dylan O’Connor pointing a free.

In the dying moments Rian Hennessy kicked a massive point as CBS advanced to a Munster final meeting with Pobal Scoil Inbhear Sceine Kenmare on Saturday week.
