CBS Midleton 4-14 Our Lady’s Templemore 2-15

CBS Midleton qualified for the Quarter-Finals of the Dean Ryan Cup following a hard earned five-point victory over Our Lady’s Templemore on a rain-sodden Clonmel Sportsfield on Wednesday.

Midleton won the toss and indeed, won most of the early battles as the Cork school dominated the opening exchanges. An 11th minute goal by Izaak Walsh was no more than they deserved and at the end of the first quarter, Midleton led by 1-4 to 0-3 despite hitting 8 wides to that point. Our Lady’s Templemore improved in the second quarter and when Michael Ryan finished off a 40 metre solo run with a goal, there was now just a point between the sides after 25 minutes. Templemore drew level in the 29th minute but an injury time point by Ryan McCarthy ensured Midleton led at the interval by 1-9 to 1-8.

The second half began in a heavy downpour as both sides struggled in the conditions. By the 40th minute, the sides were level at 1-11 apiece and it looked as if little would separate them. Midleton then burst in to life with two goals in a minute courtesy of Leo Hennessy and Tom Dillon to take a commanding lead. Templemore were not finished yet however and a 43rd minute goal by James Devaney left just two points between the teams heading in to the final quarter, 3-11 to 2-12 in favour of Midleton.

The Cork side stretched their lead out to three points before Templemore’s Michael Ryan saw his goal bound shot saved by Alex Quirke in the Midleton goal in the 51st minute. Undeterred, Templemore cut the deficit to a single point thanks to scores from John Campion and Dean Lawlor. However, there would be no grandstand finish as top scorer Ryan McCarthy scored a point followed soon after by a goal in the 56th minute to leave five points between the teams. Templemore tried valiantly for another goal but alas, the Midleton rearguard stood firm and at the final whistle, the Cork school were victorious on a scoreline of 4-14 to 2-15.

CBS Midleton will now play Ardscoil Ris Limerick in the Quarter-Finals on October 4th.
