Corn Sheáin Uí Mhaolomhnaigh Final (19 D Football) Final
Boherbue Comprehensive School 7-8 Coláiste Ghobnatan Baile Mhic Íre 2-11
Report by Ed Donnelly
Boherbue Comprehensive School are the Munster Under 19 D Football champions for 2018/2019 after a thrilling game of football which produced nine goals played in front of a good crowd in the excellent facilities of Dr. Crokes in Killarney.
Following overnight rain, conditions at throw-in were much improved as the sun shined on these two Cork schools aiming to capture Munster honours. From an early stage, Boherbue Comprehensive School had the better of the exchanges and though both teams missed early goal chances, it was Boherbue’s Alan O’Connor who raised the first green flag in the ninth minute to put his side in front by 1-2 to 0-0. Antaine Ó Loingsigh opened Coláiste Ghobnatan’s account with a pointed free in the 12th minute followed a minute later by a Michéal Ó Duinnín goal to leave just a point between the sides.
Boherbue continued to show the greater attacking threat and goals by Liam Moynihan and Gerry O’Sullivan (penalty) put their side in to a 3-3 to 1-2 lead after 25 minutes. Coláiste Ghobnatan finished the first half strongly, scoring three of the last four points to leave Boherbue in front at the interval by 3-4 to 1-5.
Wayne MacCarthaigh reduced the deficit further with a point from play for Coláiste Ghobnatan in the opening minute of the second half. In the 33rd minute, a promising Coláiste Ghobnatan attack broke down and Boherbue’s counter attack resulted in a Cormac Curtin goal to stretch their lead to 4-4 to 1-6.
Both teams were reduced to 14 players when two players received their second yellow card for separate incidents in the 39th and 41st minutes respectively but the reduction in numbers made little difference to the overall run of play. Caoimhín Ó Donnchú was now operating to good effect at full-forward for Coláiste Ghobnatan and scored 1-1 in the space of a minute before a Colm MacLochlann free reduced the deficit to 4-4 to 2-8 after 43 minutes.
The game was now in the melting pot as both sides fought tooth and nail for every ball. The next four points were shared and going in to the last ten minutes, Boherbue still held on to their two-point advantage, 4-6 to 2-10.
Any uncertainty about the eventual winners was well and truly put to bed when Boherbue scored two goals in a minute – firstly through Luke Murphy followed by Jack Curtin which proved to be the death knell of Coláiste Ghobnatan’s ambitions. Boherbue added two further points before Cillian Murphy added Boherbue’s seventh goal in injury time to wrap up a 7-8 to 2-11 victory.
Afterwards, Alan O’Connor and Francis Cronin accepted the John Moloney Cup on behalf of a Boherbue school winning this competition for the second time in three years.
