Coláiste Chríost Rí 1-18 Tralee CBS 1-18 (AET): Coláiste Chríost Rí had to score the final four points at Mallow on Saturday to send this Corn Uí Mhuirí semi-final tie to a replay, but it was difficult to argue against a draw being the fair outcome.
In the opening 60 minutes, both Críost Rí and Tralee CBS had comebacks from five points down. The Cork city school had to equalise at the end of normal time and extra- time, with joint-manager Paul Kerrigan paying tribute to his side.
“Our lads are going in with a smile,” he said. “It’s a pity it had to take going down by a couple of points — twice — to drive on and play like we did in the first half, but we’ll take the replay, it’ll stand to us. If there had been another kick-out at the end of normal time or extra-time, we might have won it.”
Críost Rí went in at the break leading by 0-8 to 0-5 after a strong finish to the half, and they seemed set to push on when Mark Cronin and Mark Brosnan extended that lead on the resumption.
Instead, Tralee drew level before surging clear. Tom Hoare and Gearóid Fitzgerald were central as Tralee ate into the Críost Rí lead and sub Jason Mortimer put them 0-11 to 0-10 ahead in the 44th minute. While a good Cronin free levelled, Fitzgerald pushed Tralee ahead before wing-back Michael Scanlon netted, his initial shot having been saved by Darragh Moran.
Hoare made it 1-13 to 0-11 with five minutes left as Críost Rí wasted chances, but Darragh Kelly’s goal brought them back into the tie and Ronan Dalton and Cronin sent the game to extra time.
Tralee led by two at the turnaround and then Tomás O’Connor made it 1-18 to 1-14 with a pair of points.
Críost Rí wouldn’t wilt, and three Cillian Myers-Murray points, and one from Cronin, tied the game.
“We had a few chances that we could have taken,” said Tralee manager Mike Tim O’Sullivan. “When you draw after being five points up, that is disappointing, but a draw was a fair result. It was a great game and both teams will be looking forward to going again. One thing this year is that we never panic. We know there are going to be periods when teams dominate and we’ve learned to ride that out. We’ve faith in our fellas and we trusted they were going to claw it back, but Críost Rí were the same.”

ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE of Killarney must wait to discover their Corn Uí Mhuirí final opponents after 80 minutes couldn’t separate Coláiste Chríost Rí and Tralee CBS in Mallow on Saturday.

Four points in the final six minutes of extra time, three by Cillian Myers Murray and one from Mark Brosnan, earned Críost Rí the replay after it looked as if Tralee had moved into an unassailable lead. The fightback was in keeping with the overall flow of the game, though, as a five-point Críost Rí lead early in the second half was wiped out, Michael Kelliher central for Tralee.
Michael Scanlon’s goal helped the Kerry school to lead by 1-13 to 0-11 with five minutes left, but Darragh Kelly found the net for Críost Rí before Ronan Dalton and Mark Cronin levelled by the 60-minute mark.
A largely even first half saw Críost Rí lead by 0-3 to 0-1 before Tralee responded with three points in a row, Gearóid Fitzgerald getting two of them, but the final ten minutes belonged to Críost Rí. Kelly, Daniel Lucey and huge Mark Cronin free left it 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time before Cronin and Brosnan extended the advantage on the resumption. Tralee refused to wilt though and both sides will welcome the second chance.

Colaiste Chriost Rí and Tralee CBS will do battle on Saturday for a place in the Corn Ui Mhuiri final in 3 weeks time.
Colaiste Chriost Rí are 15 times winners of this competition, the last success coming in 2011. In the group stages, the Cork school accounted for Clonakilty Community College, Mercy Mounthawk and Clonmel High School by an aggregate 35 points having failed to progress from the Group stages in the previous two seasons. The Quarter-Final versus local rivals St Francis College Rochestown was a different story altogether as very little separated the teams in a low scoring contest. Mark Cronin was top scorer for Chriost Rí with three points as they earned a 0-8 to 0-6 victory. With nine of last season’s Frewen Cup (U16.5 A Football) winning side involved, Colaiste Chriost Rí are a young side with a winning mentality as they look to qualify for their first Corn Ui Mhuiri Final in six years.
Tralee CBS also played St. Francis College Rochestown, which ended in a draw in the group stages. Victories over Coláiste na Sceilge and Coláiste Choilm Ballincollig in the other group matches saw the Tralee side through to a Quarter-Final meeting with IS Killorglin. Tralee trailed by four points with 20 minutes remaining in that Quarter-Final but a strong final quarter saw them outscore Killorglin by 1-5 to 0-1, the goal coming courtesy of substitute Jason Mortimer, to secure their place in the semi-finals. A number of the current Tralee CBS side finished as runners-up to St. Brendans Killarney in the 2014/2015 Frewen Cup. Kerry Minor Kieran Dwyer at centre-back and Dual Kerry Minor All-Ireland winner Tomás O’Connor at midfield will lead the Tralee CBS charge for a place in the semi-finals. Tralee CBS last qualified for the Corn Ui Mhuri finals in 2007 and 2008, both against St. Brendans with one win (2007) and one defeat (2008). A victory against Colaiste Chriost Rí could set up another meeting with their Killarney rivals.
