Dr. Harty Cup (Under 18 ½ A Hurling)
Blackwater Community School Lismore 2-17 Castletroy College 1-13
Round-up by Ed Donnelly (info.munster@gaa.ie)
Blackwater Community School Lismore defeated Castletroy College by 2-17 to 1-13 in Group C of the Dr. Harty Cup Hurling competition.
Castletroy College got off to the best possible start with a point by Ronan Reale in the opening minute. From the resultant puckout however, Blackwater Community School sent in a long ball to full-forward Gavin Dalton who duly dispatched a shot to the net to open their account. This score gave the Lismore school the impetus to dominate the opening quarter and when Kyle Bennett scored Blackwater’s second goal in the 11th minute, they led by 2-4 to 0-2.

The second quarter was more even as Castletroy slowly got in to the game. By the half-time break, Blackwater led by 2-10 to 0-7. The game was over as a contest at this stage but to their credit, Castletroy played well in the second half, in particular in defence as they restricted Blackwater’s scoring to the accuracy of placed balls by Finbar Reaney who notched up 10 points in the game, 9 from placed balls. Castletroy’s improved play at the back failed to convert in to scores as the Limerick school relied too much on Mark O’Dwyer to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
As both teams made a number of substitutions in the second half, the game petered out to its inevitable conclusion but not before Mark O’Dwyer scored a goal from a 20 metre free with the last puck of the game. That score brought O’Dwyer’s tally to 1-7 (1-6 from frees) of Castletroy’s tally as Blackwater ran out winners by 7 points, 2-17 to 1-13.
Both schools duly qualified for the last 16 of the Harty Cup scheduled for next week with Blackwater Community School now playing local rivals De La Salle Waterford while Castletroy College will play Nenagh CBS.
