The teams cancelled each other out in the opening stages with both sets of defences on top. It took until the tenth minute for the opening score to arrive when Mark Cronin kicked a point from long range for Colaiste Chriost Ri. A minute later, Daniel Lucey forced a turnover in the Clonakilty full-back line and scored a goal. After a Jack Coogan point from play, another turnover in the Clonakilty defence resulted in Mark Cronin setting up Daniel Lucey for another goal and Colaiste Chriost Ri led by 2-2 to 0-0.
Clonakilty spurned two good goal chances in the opening half and it took until the 13th minute for them to open their account with a pointed free by Brian White. This score had little effect on the general run of play with Colaiste Chriost Ri dominating possession in the middle third. Eventually, this possession was translated in to scores as Colaiste Chriost Ri scored six unanswered points from the 15th to the 22nd minute to race in to a 2-8 to 0-1 lead. The points came courtesy of Fiachra Cronin, Mark Cronin (2), Mark Brosnan (2) and Wayne Flood.
It took until the 26th minute for Clonakilty to score their first point from play, an effort converted by JP Eady and on the stroke of half-time, Ciaran Nyland added another point from play to leave the interval score Colaiste Chriost Ri 2-8 Clonakilty Community College 0-3.
When Mark Brosnan extended Colaiste Chriost Ri’s lead with a point from play in the first minute of the second half, a comprehensive victory looked on the cards. However, to their credit Clonakilty began to get back in to the game. Two pointed frees by Brian White reduced the deficit before Ryan Scannell set up JP Eady for a Clonakilty goal in the 34th minute. Further points from Brian White (free) and Ciaran Nylan left just five points between the teams after eight minutes of the second half.
Colaiste Chriost Ri responded in the best possible manner when they scored three points from play in rapid succession courtesy of Jack Coogan, Daniel Lucey and Mark Brosnan to leave eight points between the sides. Clonakilty replied with points by Brian White (free) and Ciaran Nyland to leave six points in it heading in to the final quarter.
Daniel Lucey added a point from play from Colaiste Chriost Ri in the 46th minute and this would be their final score of the game as they began to resort to a possession based game. For much of the last quarter of the game, Colaiste Chriost Ri kept their hands on the ball, spraying possession from wing to wing and backwards on many occasions. With a comprehensive lead, it was a case of what we have, we hold and despite Clonakilty’s best efforts, they found it very difficult to get the necessary possession to threaten the Colaiste Chriost Ri defence.
Clonakilty’s JP Eady scored a point from play in the 51st minute and despite some long range shots and balls being dropped in to the danger area, no further scores would be recorded in the remainder of normal time or 3+ minutes of injury time as Colaiste Chriost Ri ran out six point winners.
In the final round, Colaiste Chriost Ri will take on De La Salle College Macroom with both teams needing a win to progress to the Quarter-Final stages. De La Salle College Macroom have two points from two games to date but with a superior scoring difference, a victory in Round 3 will guarantee them a place in the knockout stages. Coláiste Choilm Ballincollig play Clonakilty Community College in the final round with Ballincollig (on two points from two games) in with a chance of the knockout stages also so its all to play for in Round 3 scheduled for November 22nd.
