The Colaiste Ide agus Iosef, Abbeyfeale boys Under 15 Football team had an impressive win in the Corn Mháirtín Mhic Chonmara on Friday last, comfortably beating Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Blarney in the Final played in Millstreet.
Abbeyfeale dominated from the outset, driven on by centre back Daniel Hunt who opened the scoring with a point and centre forward Ashton Kelly who kicked some very impressive scores from distance. Leading by four points early on, a goal by Alex Collins in the 10th minute put daylight between the teams as Abbeyfeale played with the aid of a strong breeze.
From there to half time there was no let up with Jamie McAuliffe and Liam Troude dominating the Blarney kickout and at half time, Abbeyfeale led 3-9 to 0-1.
Aided by the wind in the second half, Blarney tried bravely to reduce the deficit and good play by their midfield and half forward line saw Blarney kick a couple of good points early on.
Despite this Abbeyfeale continued to apply pressure all over the field and never let Blarney get enough momentum to really trouble them. Further goals from Kevin Dundon, Shane Kavanagh and Liam Troude as well as an excellent penalty save from keeper Will O’Hanlon saw Abbeyfeale leading 6-15 to 0-5 approaching the final whistle.
A superb goal from a 20 meter free kick allowed Blarney to finish the game on a positive note, but Colaiste Ide agus Iosef ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 6-15 to 1-5.
Captain Alex Collins was on hand to receive the cup from David Kenneally who congratulated both teams on a very clean and fair game of football. He also thanked referee Denis Hickey and Millstreet GAA for the field which was in great condition.
