Scoil Mhuire agus Íde, Newcastle West 2-13 Boyne Community School, Trim 1-11
Newcastle West school Scoil Muire agus Íde were inspired by goalscorers Conor Hough and Gavin Dorgan as they withstood a late Boyne Community School rally to collect the All Ireland Colleges ‘C’ hurling title.
The victory in Banagher is further breakthrough for the rising tide of hurling in west Limerick, with the Michael Cusack Cup returning to Limerick after Scoil Pól Kilfinnane won the same competition 12 months ago.
Their Meath opponents will be frustrated by their level of output but there was little doubt that the more dominant side emerged victorious. A stunning team goal two minutes in the second half, finished off by Dorgan, was the catalyst needed for the winners.
These sides played a frantic and tense opening quarter, with the Trim school taking an early 0-3 to 0-1 advantage, despite playing against the strong breeze.
However, after being off target with a number of long range efforts, Newcastle West grabbed a goal at the very end of the first quarter. A fine bit of play saw Dorgan through, unselfishly he centred for the unmarked Hough, his clubmate, who made no mistake.
They would lead from here all the way to the finish. By half-time it was 1-5 to 0-4, with Shane Jordan (free) adding to earlier scores from Leon Harris, Joey Christie and the impressive Cathal Barron.
For SMI, Dorgan, Diarmuid Mulaney and Hough were all accurate, though they still managed nine first half wides.
Managed by Jeremiah Moroney and Kevin O’Brien, the Limerick school may have been concerned with their wastefulness at half-time. The gap was back to just a goal when Kosei Kirwan flicked over from close range.
However, a string of stick passes unlocked the defence with Dorgan on the end of a tremendous team move to bury home their second.
Despite a rally from the Boynesiders, which included a run of three points, they were never likely to level this contest. Indeed, they needed a goal and it arrived on 50 minutes.
Patrick Cagney cynically tripped Barron and from the resultant free, Joey Christie saw his low effort hit the net. Suddenly, there was a goal between the sides again but Dorgan replied from virtually the next attack.
Late points from captain Diarmuid Lyons, Hough, and sub Liam O’Connor sealed the victory. SMI appeared inspired by their change of jerseys, a burgundy ensemble, Limerick’s alternative.
This adds to their Munster title sealed last month, and gives a different kind of heartbreak to Trim, who missed this final altogether due to Covid, in 2020.
