Munster Post Primary Schools Under 15 ‘B’ hurling final: Tralee CBS 4-11 John The Baptist 0-12

Tralee CBS gained compensation for their Munster U-17 loss to John The Baptist CS Hospital when they captured the TUS Corn Reamainn Ui hOgain Cup (U-15 ‘B’ hurling) against the same opponents in the Bog Garden, Rathkeale on Thursday afternoon.

The Tralee school became the first Kerry side to win a ‘B’ hurling final since the colleges and vocational sector were amalgamated in 2014.

The Green were the better side throughout, from superb goalkeeper Darragh O’Connor to man of the match Jason Gaynor, who top scored with 2-6.

John The Baptist CS were on the back foot from the 11th minute when Gaynor weaved a magical run in along the end line and, having caught the sliotar twice, he somehow batted it tennis style over advancing keeper Christopher Harty.

Gaynor had earlier missed two frees that he would normally convert, but once he got going, the Ballyheigue youngster was in unstoppable form.

John The Baptist CS were over reliant on corner forward and free taker Jason Ryan, but the Green were dominant around the middle where Joe Field, Jack Corridon, Shay Barrett and Andy Costello ruled the roost.

Two more Gaynor frees and a fortuitous Jack Corridon goal saw the Green race 2-4 to 0-1 clear by the end of the opening quarter.

JTB CS finally got going and fired over three unanswered points from Jason Ryan (free), Lee Jay Browne and Keith Quinn play to close the gap to six but Tralee CBS finished the half the stronger.

Gaynor scored three points while Ben O’Connor and Jack Corridon added a point each, with Ryan replying with a brace but Tralee CBS were in control leading 2-9 to 0-6 at half time.

John The Baptist CS had the wind in the second half but they needed an early goal to have any chance of a comeback and instead it was the Green and that man Gaynor who sent in a 65 that was not cleared and Andy Costello found the JTB CS net. Costello followed that with a quick point from play.

The Green were now in cruise control, leading by 3-10 to 0-7 as JTB CS full-back Seamus Hyland fired over a monster point from distance.

As hard as John the Baptist tried, they could not pierce the Green rearguard where Tadgh Diggin, David Cullinan, Ben O’Connor and the imperious Stephen Harty reigned supreme.

When they did get through the Green, keeper O’Connor made a number of superb saves, turning a Keith Quinn rasper around the post, tipping a Jason Ryan effort over the bar, plus his puckouts were long and accurate.

Ryan added five more points (4fs) but in the 54th minute, Gaynor struck for a second goal and Tralee CBS were now cruising, and they went on to make their own bit of history.
