Champions Ardscoil Rís progress in fine style

Report by Therese O’Callaghan for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Ardscoil Rís 4-16 Charleville CBS 1-7

Ardscoil Rís produced another impressive display in the Dr Harty Cup at Kilmallock yesterday, beating Charleville CBS by 18-points. The champions, who defeated Hamilton High in the first round by a big margin, scored 4-14 from play, are now in the last eight.

Charleville were competitive in the opening half even though they trailed by seven points at the break, but they lost their way thereafter, and had to rely on able free-taker Cormac O’Brien for most their scores. Their goal came in second-half stoppage time.

When Darragh Carroll’s long delivery deceived Charleville CBS goalkeeper David Jones on six minutes, Ardscoil Rís were up and running. Jones did well to bring the sliotar down but with the sun in his eyes the ball dropped over the line.

With Carroll and Joe Gleeson dominant at midfield, and Jerome Boylan on top in an assertive backline, there was plenty of supply up front. Carroll, Jack McInerney and Rory Duff raised six white flags between them. The winners led 1-8 to 0-4 at half-time. O’Brien brought the Cork side into contention with a pair of frees after the restart, but Ardscoil Rís replied immediately through Gleeson, Brian Ryan (free) and Carroll. and they were eight points clear before Ryan raced through to rattle the net at the beginning of the fourth quarter to push them 2-12 to 0-7 ahead. Duff added a brace of points and then David Woulfe cracked home his side’s third goal with six minutes left, 3-14 to 0-7.

Possessing so much firepower and inter-county experience, Ardscoil Rís closed out formidably, Woulfe added his second green flag in injury-time. Meanwhile, Will Henn and Reuben McCarthy came off the bench to register a point apiece. Jack Doyle netted a consolation goal for Charleville CBS.
